Interesting facts about the boat excursion from Dubrovnik
Before you go, be informed.
Gathering and start of the boat excursion is from Port behind Gruž Market, Dubrovnik.
Named Elaphite islands after the Latin word Elaphos for deer, this archipelago, which used to be the habitat of this noble wild game, concentrates all the qualities of the untouched Mediterranean, featuring subtropical vegetation, expansive pine tree forests and olive groves, all surrounded by amazing sandy beaches.
Car-free Lopud has the prettiest settlement of all the Elafitis, composed of stone houses surrounded by BEAUTIFUL gardens and overlooked by ruined fortresses. The first sight when sailing into the harbour is the immense sea wall and 30m-high bell tower of Lopud’s 15th-century Franciscan Monastery.
Further along the seaside promenade is shady Ɖorđić-Mayneri Park, laid out in the late 19th-century by the great-granddaughter of Dubrovnik’s last rector.
There’s a little beach, but you’re better off walking across the spine of the island to the beautiful sandy beach Šunj. The walk takes about 25 minutes, or you can grab a ride in a golf cart.
Šipan is the biggest island in the Elafiti archipelago, covered with lush Mediterranean vegetation, olive & fig trees, vineyards and citrus groves.
This island will show you pure local hospitality and a chance to taste olive oil and wine in an authentic rural household ambiance.
Šipan itself has held on to the spirit of the past – the island once being one of the most popular recreational destinations for wealthy families from Dubrovnik, one finds many magnificent summer residences and palaces. Two of the most adorned buildings are located in the central square of Suđurađ and enthuse guests with their fortress-like construction, defensive walls and watchtower.
Koločep Island, called by locals ‘Kalamota’ is the nearest to Dubrovnik and this is also the smallest of the three inhabited islands in the archipelago with under 160 permanent inhabitants. Two small villages, Gornje Čelo on the southeast side and Donje Čelo on the north side of the island are the only settlements.
Koločep is a car-free zone, with just a few lanes leading along the bays and beach. A great curving sandy beach in Donje Čelo is the most popular beach on the island, while other swimming spots are all on an easy walking distance from both villages.
